Ordering Roof Materials

When beginning a roofing job, it is important to estimate how much material you will need, so you do not have to re-order multiple times, thus delaying progress. This article will help give you some tips to ordering the correct amount to get the job done the first time.

One of the first things you will want to look at is the slope of your roof. This is important because it will determine how much material you buy. If your roof is flatter, it has a higher potential for leaks because water will not run off as fast, thus making you need more protection and materials. Metal panels can be put on medium sloped roofs, and selvage edge roofs can go on a very low slope. For a flat roof, you need to have metal, or elastomer roofing installed by a professional.

To determine the slope of the roof, you first need to either get on the roof itself, or work from a ladder next to the roof. You will need a long piece of wood such as a 2 X 4, a level and a ruler. Lay the board flat on the roof pointing up and down, then mark on it 12 inches from one end and place the level where you marked the board. Raise the end until level. Hold the ruler at the 12-inch mark on the board and measure the distance to the level. If the distance is 4, you have a 4 in 12 pitch.

Once you know your pitch, it is time to get the area of the roof. The best way to do this is to get on the roof and begin to measure each section. Divide sections into shapes with easily calculate able formulas such as triangles and squares. If a section is difficult to get onto, estimate it from the ground, as it is not worth your safety to risk falling off. Draw a paper outline to add ridges, porches and chimneys. This will help give you an idea of how much you will need as if you had a flat roof. Once you find the area, and deduct for chimneys and skylights, always add a good 10 percent for waste. It is better to have a little extra than to be short. Take the square footage number you came up with, divide it by 100, and round it to the nearest number to find the number of squares you will need to purchase.

Make sure to price all the materials individually. Some places will have lower priced items, then charge you a lot for other materials. Make sure you can get rooftop delivery so you do not have to haul the items yourself. Get materials delivered as close to your working date as possible.
